France is divided into clear areas of food speciality. In the North, around Normandy, they cook with butter, produce dairy products such as Camembert cheese, and they are a major apple producing area.
In contrast, in the South, around Provence, they cook with olive oil, and the olive is used in many dishes along with the aromatic herbs of the area.
Gascony is the goose fat region specialising in foie gras, confit, and cassoulet.
Snails from Burgundy, Choucroute from the Alsace, oysters from Brittany and speciality cheeses from virtually every region in France.
France is one of the few countries where you can make a gastronomic tour, moving from region to region to find a food speciality and inevitably the local wine to accompany it.
French Living restaurant holds a number of Discovery Evenings every three months. These evenings allow you to take such a gastronomic journey with a specially devised menu, including wines to accompany each dish. Call French Living on 0115 9585885 or email info@frenchliving.co.uk for more information and the dates of our next Discovery Evenings.
At French Living we buy fresh ingredients every day from UK suppliers, and we also travel to France every 6 weeks to buy produce that are simply not available here. Our chefs then make every dish from scratch. We do not buy ready made desserts, ready made sauces, ready made dishes, or even prepped vegetable like peeled and par-boiled potatoes. We do it the hard way, because that's what makes it good. Bon appetit!
